Vicente Vallés reveals his secret retirement haven in Tenerife

Vicente Vallés’s secret Atlantic escape

From Monday to Friday, millions of Spaniards sit down in front of the television to hear Vicente Vallés analyse the news. He has won the most prestigious awards in broadcasting and is one of the most influential faces in the country, but when the red light on the Atresmedia cameras goes off, he heads to a secret refuge in Tenerife.

Hidden away from the media noise and the frantic pace of Madrid, the news anchor has found his own personal oasis in the Atlantic. It is a corner of the world he uses not just to recharge between bulletins, but which he has also set his sights on for the future. Vallés has revealed his ultimate getaway: a spot in the Canary Islands he fell hopelessly in love with, where he already owns a house – and where he plans to retire when the time comes.

Abades: a quiet coastal village

The place in question? Abades, a small, tranquil coastal village in the municipality of Arico, on the south-east coast of Tenerife. In a revealing interview with Binter’s in-flight magazine, Vallés opened up about his personal life and explained how this corner of Tenerife changed his family’s plans.

It all began by chance, at Christmas. “Just before our youngest child was born, twelve years ago, we spent our first Christmas in Gran Canaria. We enjoyed it so much that we decided we had to find somewhere in the Canary Islands where we could go regularly. And we found it there, in Abades,” the journalist confesses.

Love for the whole archipelago

Vallés’s love affair with the archipelago did not stop at Tenerife. His passion for the islands runs so deep that he now boasts of having completed the full set. “Being there in the Canary Islands has made us so happy that we now know all eight islands, including La Graciosa,” he says.

For the journalist, the Arico coastline represents the exact opposite of the media pressure and noise of the capital. Abades, known for its relaxed atmosphere, whitewashed houses and crystal-clear coves, offers him something he cannot find anywhere on the mainland. “First of all, calm and a different pace of life that has nothing to do with what we have here day to day,” Vallés explains in the pages of the Binter publication.

Planning for the long term

The news anchor does not hide the fact that his current escapes are less frequent than he would like, due to the demands of his daily work at Atresmedia. But he has his eye firmly on the long-term future. Asked what he is looking for in the archipelago, Vallés is clear: “I am thinking about the day after I finish work – retirement and the chance to spend long periods in the Canary Islands.”

A true paradise for switching off, where the day’s headlines fade into the background and the only clock that matters is the rhythm of the Atlantic.
