A breezy start to the week
Get ready for a blustery Monday across the Canary Islands. The trade winds are picking up, bringing strong gusts and a dust-laden sky over the east. Temperatures are also on the rise, with the mercury set to climb well above 30°C in the interior of the larger islands.
General conditions
A moderate to strong trade wind will dominate the day, with very strong gusts (over 70 km/h) possible on the northwest and southeast slopes, as well as inland areas of the eastern islands. Meanwhile, the mountain peaks will see an easterly component to the wind, and a light ocean breeze will prevail on the southwestern coasts of the mountainous islands.
The Atlantic remains active, with a combined swell from the northeast producing waves over 1.5 metres on north-facing coasts and along the western shores of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. Conditions will worsen as the afternoon progresses. The more sheltered southern coasts will see calmer, rough ocean conditions.
Temperatures will rise moderately, most noticeably in the daytime highs. Inland parts of the south and west of Gran Canaria could surpass 34°C, while elsewhere, temperatures will range between 30°C and 32°C in mid-altitude areas and the interior.
