Pedri’s hometown: Tegueste, the Tenerife village that shaped a star

Pedri’s roots: one of LaLiga’s finest hails from a small Tenerife village

One of LaLiga’s best players, and widely regarded as one of the finest midfielders in the world, Pedri is among the most beloved football figures in Spain. Now playing for Barcelona—the club he dreamed of joining since he was very young (such is his family’s bond with the Catalan side that his father is president of the Barcelona supporters’ club in their hometown)—Pedri’s roots lie in a small municipality in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In the far north of the island of Tenerife, the village of Tegueste watched Pedri grow up from a very young age. Although the footballer now lives in the town of Castelldefels, his family still lives in the village, to which Pedri returns whenever he gets the chance.

A coastal exception: life in one of Tenerife’s three landlocked municipalities

One of just three municipalities in Tenerife without a coastline, Tegueste has a population of approximately 11,500. It takes its name from the ancient Guanche kingdom of Tegueste, which in the past covered the current area of the municipality, along with the settlements of Valle de Guerra, Tejina and Bajamar. With an old town designated a Site of Cultural Interest in 1986, the village still preserves remarkable remnants of Guanche culture.

Guanche heritage and ancient caves in the Agua de Dios ravine

On the north-western edge of the village lies the Barranco de Agua de Dios (Agua de Dios ravine), declared a site of cultural interest in the category of archaeological zone in 2006. Along the ravine, various caves have been discovered—the most significant being the Cueva de los Cabezazos—which the Guanches used as homes and burial chambers.

Modest monuments: from a 16th-century church to a traditional winery

Because it is a small village, Tegueste does not have many monuments. But those it does have are well worth a visit. In the neighbourhood of El Socorro, the Church of Nuestra Señora del Socorro is the oldest in the area, built in the 16th century. In the centre of the village stands the parish church of San Marcos, dedicated to the local patron saint. Perfect for discovering the rural and vinicultural essence of the village, the Casa de los Zamorano is located at one end of the town.

Walking among vineyards: exploring the Anaga Rural Park and Mesa de Tejina

The surroundings of Tegueste are ideal for a bit of hiking. Covered in vineyards—the main crop of the area—the trails extend through the Anaga Rural Park, a designated Biosphere Reserve, and the Mesa de Tejina, a volcanic formation that offers spectacular views of the landscape.
