Welcome to summer, Canary Islands style
The meteorological summer has officially arrived, and the Islands are greeting it with a classic trade wind setup. Monday brings a mix of cloud, sun, and a light bump in temperatures. Some southern inland spots could even touch 30°C.
It’s not all smooth sailing, though. A pre-alert for forest fires is active across the western province (Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro) and Gran Canaria, thanks to the combination of dry conditions and moderate winds.
General conditions
Expect cloudy skies on the northern sides of the mountainous islands below 600–900 metres, though breaks will appear during the afternoon. The rest of the islands will see mostly clear skies. In Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, morning clouds will give way to clearer conditions, except on the western coasts where variable cloud cover lingers.
Moderate trade winds will blow across the archipelago, with stronger intervals on exposed slopes, particularly in the southeast and northwest of the mountainous islands. Occasional very strong gusts are likely during the afternoon. Southwestern coasts will see lighter ocean breezes.
Temperatures are set to rise slightly, most noticeably in inland southern areas of Tenerife and the eastern islands, where thermometers could locally reach or exceed 30°C.
Ocean conditions
The Atlantic is a mixed bag today. Northern coasts and the western shores of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote will face combined seas with waves exceeding 1.5 metres. More sheltered southern areas will see a rough ocean but nothing too rowdy.
Island-by-island
Tenerife
Cloudy skies in the north during the morning, clearing up later. The rest of the island will be mostly clear. Moderate trade winds, with a chance of very strong gusts in the southeast and around the Anaga massif. Temperatures range from 18°C to 26°C in the capital.
Gran Canaria
The classic “panza de burro” (a stubborn cloud deck) will hang over the north and the capital, while the rest of the island stays clear. Moderate trade winds, stronger in the southeast and northwest during the afternoon. Temperatures between 19°C and 23°C in Las Palmas.
Lanzarote
Morning clouds will fade to mostly clear skies on the eastern and southern sides. Moderate trade winds, picking up inland. Temperatures in Arrecife: 18°C to 25°C.
Fuerteventura
Cloudy to start, then clearing up, though the western side will keep some cloud cover. Moderate trade winds. Thermometers will swing between 18°C and 25°C in the capital.
La Palma
Mostly clear skies except for some morning cloud in the northeast. A few afternoon clouds will appear in the west, but nothing significant. Moderate trade winds, accelerating in the southeast and northwest. Top temperature around 24°C in Santa Cruz de La Palma.
La Gomera
Cloudy intervals in the north; the rest of the island is clear. Moderate trade winds, stronger around the capital during the afternoon. Coastal maximum temperatures between 21°C and 27°C.
El Hierro
Variable cloud cover in the northeast and around Valverde, with mostly clear skies elsewhere. Moderate trade winds, stronger in the south and west. Pleasant temperatures throughout.
La Graciosa
Mostly cloudy skies. Moderate trade winds. Temperatures in Caleta de Sebo ranging from 19°C to 24°C.
