Lidl strengthens commitment to Canarian produce with record investment
Lidl is advancing its firm and ongoing commitment to Canarian products, consolidating its role as a strategic partner for the agricultural sector and local producers. One of the most notable milestones of the past year has been the push for internationalisation, reaching one million euros in exports of Canarian goods. This allows products made in the islands to reach Lidl stores on the Spanish mainland and in other European markets, reinforcing the chain’s role as a bridge between Canarian producers and international consumers, while boosting the visibility and recognition of these products abroad.
Record investment in local suppliers
The company has increased its spending on Canarian products to 119 million euros, 19 million more than in 2024. This record figure reflects a steady growth trend in recent years and demonstrates Lidl’s confidence in the quality, competitiveness, and uniqueness of local production. This effort has built a robust network of collaboration with nearly 100 Canarian suppliers, with whom the company maintains stable, long-term relationships. Thanks to this close partnership, Lidl now offers around 900 Canarian product lines on its shelves — a number that not only broadens the presence of local goods in its stores across the archipelago but also strengthens its position as one of the leading distributors of Canarian products outside the islands.
With this progress, Lidl reaffirms its commitment to the economic and social development of the Canary Islands and strengthens its role as a driver of the primary sector, creating opportunities for growth, innovation, and access to new markets for local businesses.
Carlos Martínez, Lidl’s regional director in the Canary Islands, said: “The growth to 119 million euros in purchases of Canarian products and the collaboration with nearly 100 local suppliers reflect a model built on mutual trust and long-term work. We believe in local produce not only for its quality but because it is key to promoting more sustainable development and generating value in the community.” He added: “Our goal is to continue supporting Canarian producers in their growth, bringing their products to more and more customers both within and beyond the Canary Islands.”
Internationally awarded local quality
The quality of Canarian production remains a fundamental pillar. Lidl actively works to develop distinctive products alongside its suppliers, many of which have been recognised at national and international competitions. For example, the semi-cured goat’s cheese with paprika from the Volcania brand won an award at the World Cheese Awards, reinforcing the reputation of Canarian products as a byword for excellence. In the last year alone, more than 160 product lines on Lidl’s shelves have been distinguished at national and international contests, endorsing the quality and uniqueness of the chain’s offerings and solidifying their prestige and international projection.
Lidl’s 16-year presence in the Canary Islands
Present in the Canary Islands for 16 years, Lidl now operates 39 stores across five islands, supported by two logistics platforms in the archipelago — in Güímar, Tenerife, and Agüimes, Gran Canaria. The supermarket chain employs 1,400 people directly on the islands, and its overall activity generates an employment impact of nearly 5,000 people, including direct, indirect, and induced jobs. Its contribution to the local GDP amounts to 251 million euros annually.
Lidl’s commitment to Spain
As a major company, Lidl is working harder than ever to reinforce its commitment to Spain and contribute decisively to the country’s economic and social development. The company continues to generate shared value across the country by opening new stores and logistics platforms, creating stable, high-quality jobs, and purchasing national products — boosting and internationalising its suppliers’ businesses. All this is done while supporting vulnerable communities through projects that improve lives, and without compromising sustainability as a key factor in all its operations, always offering customers the best value for money.
