Seismic activity detected between islands

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has detected several earthquakes in recent days in the area of the Enmedio submarine volcano, situated between the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

Timeline of seismic events

The first tremor in this zone was recorded on Thursday at 16:49 local time at a depth of just seven kilometres. It had a magnitude of 2.1 mbLg. That same day, two more quakes of lower magnitude were registered just minutes apart. Specifically, one occurred at 22:52 hours, at a depth of 29 kilometres with a magnitude of 1.5 mbLg. The next tremor happened at 22:56 hours, measuring 1.3 mbLg at a depth of 21 kilometres.

On Friday, a quake was detected in the early hours at 02:41, at a depth of 10 kilometres and with a magnitude of 1.1 mbLg. Another tremor was felt around midday at 15:23, at 28 kilometres depth with a higher magnitude of 2.6 mbLg.

On Saturday, an earthquake was registered first thing in the morning at 07:35, with a magnitude of 1.3 mbLg at 28 kilometres depth. So far, the latest seismic event was recorded on Sunday morning at 08:05, with a magnitude of 2.0 mbLg at a depth of 17 kilometres.
