Land Expropriations Begin for Fuerteventura’s Major North-South Motorway

Landowners affected by major road project

Nearly 60 residents and landowners in the municipality of Antigua, Fuerteventura, are affected by the compulsory land purchases required to build the section between the airport and the Pozo Negro junction of the island’s future North-South motorway.

Technical team on the ground this week

According to a statement released by Antigua Town Hall on Friday, a technical team from the General Directorate of Road Infrastructure and Mobility has been on the ground in the municipality in recent days to carry out the preliminary surveys prior to taking possession of the land.

Mayor signs off on agreements

Mayor Matías Peña García has signed all the records formalising the expropriation agreements reached between the parties. This includes three affected plots owned by the council itself. The signings followed a meeting in the town hall’s plenary chamber with the affected residents whose land lies on the motorway’s route within Antigua’s municipal boundaries.

Project part of long-term road agreement

The council notes that the project is included in the 2018-2027 Canary Islands-State Road Agreement, with the aim of improving mobility and reinforcing road safety for travel to the north and south of the island.

Detailed and personalised process praised

The mayor highlighted the organisation and detailed attention given to each affected resident by the specialised team from the Directorate. “They came expressly to our municipality this week to detail, on maps and in a personalised way, the boundaries of each affected plot, explaining the specifics of the expropriations in detail,” he concluded.
