Teenager rescued from sea off Fuerteventura

An 18-year-old was rescued on Friday by two Civil Guard officers after getting into difficulties in the sea off the coast of the municipality of Antigua, in Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands emergency services (1-1-2 Canarias) have reported.

Emergency call and rescue

At around 5.19pm, the Coordinating Centre for Emergencies and Security (CECOES) received an alert about a swimmer in trouble at some natural pools. Two Civil Guard officers carried out the rescue, although a GES helicopter was also dispatched to the area. Rescuers descended from the aircraft in case the young man needed to be airlifted, but ultimately this was not necessary.

Hospital treatment

When assessed by medical staff at the initial point of care, the young man was found to be suffering from moderate hypothermia. He was subsequently taken by a basic life support ambulance from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) to the General Hospital of Fuerteventura.
