Tourist detained at boarding gate after Maspalomas stabbing
The National Police have arrested a 34-year-old tourist at Gran Canaria Airport as the alleged perpetrator of attempted homicide. The arrest took place as she was attempting to flee the island after allegedly stabbing a man at a tourist complex in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, in the south of Gran Canaria.
Violent dispute following a gathering
The incident occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday, 24 March. Officers were dispatched to a report of an assault with a bladed weapon at an apartment in Maspalomas. Upon arrival, they spoke with the occupants, who stated that a dispute had arisen that morning during a gathering where alcohol had been consumed.
Airport interception as suspect tried to flee
According to the police report from the Canary Islands Superior Headquarters, the alleged aggressor, a friend of the couple, is said to have launched a surprise attack on the man, stabbing him several times in the back and leg. She then reportedly made her way to Gran Canaria Airport with the intention of catching the first available flight to Germany.
Police immediately activated a search operation to locate the suspect before she could leave Gran Canaria. She was subsequently located and intercepted in the boarding area, where she was detained just moments before she would have succeeded in leaving the island.
Victim in stable condition as suspect faces justice
The victim received initial treatment from emergency medical services at the scene before being transferred to hospital for further care for his wounds. His condition is reported to be stable. The detained woman has been placed at the disposal of the judicial authority, accused of a crime of attempted homicide.
