Three fishermen rescued after boat drifts 230 kilometres off El Hierro
Maritime Rescue crews airlifted three fishermen to safety on Thursday night after their vessel was left adrift with a damaged engine and electrical problems more than 230 kilometres southwest of El Hierro.
Distress call from a remote stretch of Atlantic
The fishing boat had set out from the port of La Restinga two days earlier. The alert reporting difficulties on board reached the Tenerife control centre at 7.30pm on Thursday, but it took a further two hours to establish contact with the crew, who then reported that they were bailing out water.
Helicopter and nearby yacht assist in the operation
The Helimer 204 helicopter was scrambled and the yacht DRAAK, which was in the area, was asked to provide auxiliary support until the rescue could be carried out by air. The fishermen were subsequently flown back to the island.
