El Puertito residents evacuated as sea invades homes
Adeje Town Council has evacuated several residents from the El Puertito area after the sea breached their homes due to powerful waves driven by Storm Therese. The council has made the municipal shelter available to those affected, although several have chosen to stay with family members instead.
Coastal walkways damaged and sealed off
The seafront promenade at El Puertito has sustained damage from the high tides, and council workers have already cordoned off the area to prevent public injury. Part of the promenade at the Varadero de La Caleta in Adeje has also been closed, and a bar was temporarily evacuated due to the dangerous swell.
Mayor offers reassurance and support
The acting mayor, Epifanio Díaz Hernández, visited the affected zone to speak with residents, offering reassurance and confirming the council’s readiness to provide any necessary support. “In these emergency situations, the moment we activate the municipal plan, we always consider the possibility of having to evacuate residents. We therefore have provisional accommodation ready, which in this case is a comarcal [regional] shelter set up in collaboration with the Red Cross and the Island Council,” he explained.
Major power cut compounds problems
Beyond the evacuations, the main issue affecting the southern municipality today has been a failure in the power supply. Since 1am, the neighbourhoods of Tijoco and La Hoya have been without electricity, affecting some 800 households, including parts of the neighbouring municipality of Guía de Isora. The supply company has repeatedly postponed the estimated time for restoration, and homes in the area remain without power.
“We have been in contact with the supply company all day, pressing for the situation to be resolved as soon as possible. However, it’s important to understand that these kinds of faults during meteorological emergencies are highly unpredictable,” the acting mayor added.
Emergency shelter at full capacity
The El Galeón Sports Hall in Adeje has been operating as the regional emergency shelter since the start of the weather alert. Its initial capacity for 60 people has been expanded to 70. Currently, 52 people are using the facility, including two family units. The shelter is managed by the Red Cross, and anyone in need can go there directly.
Emergency services on alert until Sunday
The emergency service will remain active throughout tonight and no easing of the alert is expected until Sunday, depending on how the weather develops.
