Santa Cruz to shade Calle Castillo from the sun

Santa Cruz de Tenerife council, through its Strategic Planning department, has formalised the contract for the drafting of the technical project to create shade and climate protection elements on Calle Castillo, one of the city’s main commercial streets and one of its busiest pedestrian thoroughfares.

In a statement, the mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, stressed that the measure responds to a need identified on one of the most heavily used and representative streets in the city, particularly during the hottest months. “We want Calle Castillo to remain an attractive, dynamic and accessible space for those who live, work, shop or stroll along it, but also for it to offer better climate comfort conditions,” he added.

A light, safe and removable solution

The first deputy mayor and councillor for Strategic Planning, Carmen Pérez, explained that the goal is to define a solution that improves comfort levels on the street during periods of greatest sun exposure, creating more pleasant spaces for residents, traders and visitors.

Pérez noted that the work is being approached with a light, safe and removable solution that can be adapted to the characteristics of the street and is compatible with the protection of its architectural and heritage value.

The section between San Francisco and Weyler

The project will cover the stretch of Calle Castillo between its junction with Calle San Francisco and Plaza Weyler. The orientation of the street and its high sun exposure, especially during the summer months, make this area particularly suitable for studying solutions that improve conditions for pedestrians stopping and walking through it. The intervention will also take into account the specific characteristics of Calle Castillo, both from an urban and from a commercial and heritage perspective.

The street is one of the main axes of Santa Cruz city centre and concentrates significant commercial activity and a high footfall of residents, visitors and tourists. The project must propose a solution integrated into its surroundings, compatible with the buildings and heritage elements present on the street and with the usual accessibility and operating conditions of this thoroughfare.

Keeping the street’s commercial life going

The integration of existing elements and equipment will also be taken into account, as will the particular characteristics of the different sections of the street. One of the main criteria of the work will be that the shade elements can be dismantled when necessary, making both maintenance work and the adaptation of the installation to the street’s needs easier.

Likewise, the solution that is defined must be compatible with the commercial and pedestrian activity of the street, guarantee the maintenance of essential services and allow for proper coexistence with the furniture, trees and other existing urban elements.
