Lanzarote joins the housing protests

Lanzarote has joined the wave of encampments demanding the right to housing. The movement has set up a series of tents in Arrecife’s Parque JosΓ© RamΓrez CerdΓ‘ as a “space for meeting and organising in response to the island’s housing situation”.

The camp, organisers say in a statement, is open to public participation and was arranged after a rally, a demonstration and two assembly sessions in which “various working groups were set up”.

A committee to coordinate the campaign

Through this process, they explain, the committee La Casa de Todos y Todas has been created, tasked with coordinating meetings and actions relating to access to housing and precariousness.

Dozens of people are taking part in the encampment, located in the heart of Arrecife at Parque JosΓ© RamΓrez CerdΓ‘, beneath one of the pergolas designed by CΓ©sar Manrique, close to the Quiosco de la MΓΊsica, the Castillo de San Gabriel and the headquarters of the Universidad Nacional de EducaciΓ³n a Distancia (UNED).

Daily meetings and working groups

According to its organisers, the space will host daily meetings, assemblies and working groups. The committee plans to use it to coordinate the movement’s activities and encourage public participation.

Participants highlight rising housing prices, the difficulty of finding affordable rentals, property speculation and situations of overcrowding and evictions as the main problems. In their view, these circumstances make it harder for people to leave the family home and secure stable housing, both in Lanzarote and across the country.

Widespread support and next steps

The initiative involves people of different ages, social groups, trade unions and other movements linked to the defence of labour and social rights.

The next assembly will be held on 7 October at 8pm and will address the movement’s upcoming actions and lines of work.

Its members insist that housing cannot remain “a privilege” but must be a right, and announce that they will continue organising to demand measures to improve access to housing on the island while standing in solidarity with the protests and actions taking place across the country.
