Canary Islands record hottest September since 1961
The Canary Islands have registered their hottest September since records began in 1961, with an average temperature of 24.4°C — a remarkable 2.6°C above the reference average, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
Rainfall close to normal for the time of year
In its Climatological Summary for the Canary Islands covering September, Aemet notes that, as far as rainfall is concerned, the month was classed as normal according to the 1991-2020 reference series, ranking as the 30th driest September since 1961.
A month of relentless warmth
In thermal terms, the month was characterised by a succession of warm spells, separated by intervals of just a few days in which the sharpest drops in average temperature coincided with values close to the reference average. In other words, the average temperature remained above the reference average throughout the month, with only a handful of days on which it fell to values close to that benchmark, the agency explains.
Aemet goes on to detail that the rainfall recorded during the month consisted, in the vast majority of cases, of weak rain and drizzle.
