La Laguna Book Fair opens with record bookseller turnout
Plaza del Cristo in La Laguna becomes the meeting point for readers, writers, booksellers and industry professionals from this Thursday with the launch of a new edition of the La Laguna Book Fair, which remains open until Monday 12 October. The event faces its 2026 edition with a programme of more than 200 activities, bringing together over 80 authors, and achieving the largest bookseller participation in the last 15 years.
Fifty exhibitors and a first for Gran Canaria booksellers
The fair features 50 exhibitors this year, including 30 bookshops and 20 publishers and organisations, in an edition that also expands its regional dimension with the first-ever presence of bookshops from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. They are joined by professionals, publishers and writers from various islands, consolidating the event as a meeting space for the book sector in the Canary Islands, explains the town hall.
Culture as a driving force for society
At the opening of the fair, the mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, highlighted the festive character of this cultural occasion. “For us, culture is one of the main driving forces of this society,” he said, assuring that over the coming days the fair will become a point of attraction for thousands of people of all ages, who will be able to meet their favourite authors, discover all the latest publishing releases and enjoy a unique space for culture.
Alongside the mayor at the opening were the director general of Commerce and Consumption of the Government of the Canary Islands, David Mille, who defended the bookselling sector as “a fundamental sector because culture and commerce must always go hand in hand”; and the Culture councillor of the Cabildo de Tenerife, José Carlos Acha, who reiterated the island institution’s support for the entire value chain “from publishers to the reader, in work that we all contribute to so that the book can grow.”
For her part, the president of the Association of Booksellers of Tenerife, Remedios Sosa, stressed that “for booksellers it is very important to be here in Plaza del Cristo and to allow the most important cultural event of the year to take place over five days,” thanking the institutions for their involvement. The opening ceremony was also attended by the Culture councillor, Dailos González, and numerous members of the municipal corporation.
A programme that goes far beyond books
Over the coming days, Plaza del Cristo will host a programme that goes far beyond the presentation and sale of books. The public will be able to take part in encounters with authors, conversations, round tables, lectures, publishing presentations, workshops and activities aimed at children and young people. The programme also includes spaces dedicated to comics, illustration, poetry, fanzines and other expressions linked to contemporary creation and culture.
Canarian literature and a diversity of voices
One of the main attractions of this edition is the diversity of voices taking part in the programme. Canarian literature will have a prominent presence with authors such as Alicia Llarena, Cecilia Domínguez Luis, José Miguel Perera, Marcial Morera Pérez, Pedro Flores, Rafael-José Díaz, Santiago Gil and Víctor Álamo de la Rosa, alongside a new generation of creators.
The programme also incorporates names with outstanding careers in the current literary and cultural landscape, among them Aida González Rossi, Angelo Nestore, Carmen Pallesier, Carlota Juncosa, Helena Resano, Javier Gil, Lana Corujo, Manuel Vilas, Nerea Pérez de las Heras, Pol Guasch, Rayco Pulido and Sofía Hidalgo, among many other participants.
The book of your life: readers at the centre
The relationship between readers and their books also occupies a central place in this edition through “El libro de tu vida” (The Book of Your Life), a project that invites the public to share the works that have marked their personal journey. The initiative poses questions about the book remembered from childhood, the one you would recommend to a loved one, the one you would gift, or the one that accompanied a particularly important moment in life. With this focus on the personal experience of reading, the fair aims to strengthen its participatory dimension and to remind us that the bond with books transcends the strictly literary sphere. The stories associated with each reading also form part of individual and collective memory.
Growing professional consolidation
This year’s edition also represents a further step forward in the fair’s professional consolidation. For the past two editions, the event has been part of the National Network of Book Fairs, of which APROLITE, the Provincial Association of Bookshops of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is a founding member. The association’s presence in this network strengthens the connection of the Canarian bookselling sector with other initiatives and professionals at national level.
Booksellers themselves occupy a central role in the development of the fair. The event allows them to bring part of their usual activity into a shared space, showcase their catalogues to the public, foster direct contact with readers and assert their role as cultural agents. The participation of 30 bookshops in this edition represents, in this sense, one of the main strengths of the event.
A shared project for the city
The La Laguna Book Fair presents itself as a project shared by institutions, bookshops, publishers, authors, cultural professionals and the public. Its growth in the number of participants and activities reflects a sustained commitment to placing reading and books at the centre of the city’s cultural programme. The 2026 edition is organised by the Ayuntamiento de San Cristóbal de La Laguna and APROLITE, with the participation of the Instituto Canario de Desarrollo Cultural, the Directorate General of Commerce and the Cabildo de Tenerife, as well as the sponsorship and collaboration of various institutions, companies and organisations.
