Arrest order issued for suspect in Claudia Tacoronte feminicide

The attorney general of Morelos, Fernando Blumenkron Escobar, reported this Wednesday that an arrest order has been obtained for the alleged perpetrator of the feminicide of young Canarian student Claudia Tacoronte, identified as Francisco Javier N, and that state authorities have launched a search operation to capture him.

Prosecutor confirms warrant and search operation

“I want to inform you that yesterday we obtained from a specialised judge — the Feminicide Prosecutor’s Office obtained an arrest warrant for the feminicide of Claudia Tacoronte against a male (…) This person goes by the name of Francisco Javier N, and is attributed with responsibility for the feminicide of Claudia,” Blumenkron said in statements to the media in Cuernavaca, the capital of Morelos.

“We already have several addresses that have been investigated and some have been ruled out in order to locate him and execute the arrest warrant,” he stated, adding that the suspect, nicknamed El Trompas, has a criminal record.

Regarding the operation to detain him, the prosecutor indicated that “the search is currently concentrated particularly in (the state of) Morelos.” Blumenkron also thanked citizens for contributing videos that have offered leads which must now be strengthened with technical evidence.

Search notice published with suspect’s image

In addition, the Prosecutor’s Office of the Mexican state of Morelos circulated a search notice against Francisco Javier. The notice, published by the Specialised Prosecutor’s Office for the Investigation and Prosecution of the Crime of Feminicide, includes for the first time an image of the suspect, who is identified as the probable perpetrator of the crime of feminicide, and requests citizen assistance to locate his whereabouts.

The authority only released the suspect’s first name and initial, as Mexican law protects the identity of accused persons while they face criminal proceedings.

Claudia was in Mexico on an academic exchange

Claudia Tacoronte, 21, was stabbed to death last Saturday in Cuautla, a municipality an hour from Cuernavaca, where she had travelled to attend a popular medicinal plants fair. She was from the municipality of Santa Brígida in Gran Canaria and was studying the fourth year of a degree in Early Childhood Education at the University of Granada. She was in Mexico on an academic mobility placement at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM). She had been in the country for barely a month.
