A weakening front sweeping in from the Atlantic will bring the first proper rain of the week to the western islands this Thursday. Expect a grey, damp day in the west, with the trade winds returning and rough seas building across the archipelago.
General conditions
Cloud will thicken at multiple levels – low cloud streaming in from the north, high cloud spreading over the eastern islands. The trade winds pick up speed at both ends of the archipelago, making conditions tricky at sea. Expect a combined north-westerly ocean swell with waves of around 2.5 metres along northern coasts and in the channels between islands, while southern shores see a rougher-than-usual ocean. Temperatures ease back slightly, making this one of the cooler, damper days of the week before things settle again.
Tenerife
A grey day on both sides of the island, with rain most likely across the north. Humidity will be high, the trade winds return and temperatures hold roughly steady.
Gran Canaria
The odd spot of rain may reach the northern midlands, while high cloud blankets the south. Winds strengthen, with temperatures ranging between 24°C and 27°C.
Lanzarote
Bands of high cloud drift in from the south through the day, mixed with long sunny spells. Temperatures in Arrecife will sit between 23°C and 29°C.
Fuerteventura
More cloud, mainly high cloud, from first light. The trade winds pick up and temperatures in Puerto del Rosario will range from 22°C to 27°C.
La Palma
The first island to catch the front, with rain mainly in the north and east. A grey day with slightly cooler temperatures, between 21°C and 25°C in Santa Cruz.
La Gomera
Plenty of cloud around, with the chance of rain inland during the afternoon. The wind also strengthens, with temperatures of 23°C to 28°C in the capital.
El Hierro
A change in the weather here too, with cloud building at all levels and the chance of the odd drop of rain as the front passes. Largely dry overall.
La Graciosa
A mix of sunny spells and thicker high cloud. The wind gains strength through the day, while temperatures stay much the same as Wednesday’s.
Looking ahead to Friday
Rain spreads to the northern midlands of Gran Canaria on Friday, before conditions turn drier and brighter again over the weekend.
