A noticeably cloudier day is on the way across the Canary Islands this Tuesday, with scattered showers and the odd thunderstorm possible through the afternoon. Saharan dust also lingers in the air, settling more heavily over the higher ground of Gran Canaria and Tenerife.
What to expect island by island
Tenerife
Scattered cloud will thicken through the afternoon across the north, interior and east, where isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible. Light calima will hang over the mid-altitudes and peaks. Winds stay light from the northeast, picking up along the southeast and northwest coasts later in the day. The south and west coastlines could nudge past 30ºC, while Santa Cruz settles between 23ºC and 27ºC.
Gran Canaria
Cloud builds as the day goes on, with scattered showers and thunderstorms most likely inland during the afternoon. Calima is more pronounced over the mid-altitudes and summits, and the northeast wind will blow a little harder in the southeast. The southwest coast may exceed 30ºC, with Las Palmas ranging between 23ºC and 26ºC.
Lanzarote
Variable cloud brings the chance of occasional showers and thunderstorms, most likely over the interior and north. Calima remains in the air, winds stay light from the northeast, and Arrecife sees between 23ºC and 27ºC. Maximum temperatures dip slightly inland.
Fuerteventura
Scattered cloud with a chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Calima and a light northeast wind persist, with temperatures in Puerto del Rosario between 22ºC and 26ºC.
La Palma
The north and east turn cloudy, with rain likely from the afternoon. Elsewhere expect scattered cloud, and the west should stay mostly clear. Trade winds along the coast, moderate from the west over the summits, and 20ºC to 25ºC in Santa Cruz de La Palma.
La Gomera
Scattered cloud thickens in the afternoon, with the odd drop possible inland. Light calima at altitude and a northeast wind along the coast. San Sebastián sees between 23ºC and 27ºC.
El Hierro
Cloudy intervals will tend to overcast by the afternoon, with the chance of an isolated shower and thunderstorm over the mid-altitudes and high ground of the north, northeast and south. Light calima at altitude, northeast winds on the coast and little change in temperature.
La Graciosa
Cloudy intervals with the chance of an occasional drop in the afternoon. Calima in the air, a light northeast wind and 22ºC to 26ºC in Caleta de Sebo.
Ocean and wind
The Atlantic stays unsettled along north-facing coasts and the western shores of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, where ocean swell from the open Atlantic pushes waves to around one metre. Southern coasts see calmer, slightly choppy conditions. Winds are generally light from the northeast, strengthening along southeast and northwest coasts later, and turning light westerly over the summits — except on La Palma, where they blow moderate.
No active weather warnings are in place, but anyone heading into the mountains of Gran Canaria or Tenerife should be aware of reduced visibility from the calima.
