Canary Islands to Launch First Aerospace Engineering Degree

Canary Islands to launch pioneering aerospace degree

The Canary Islands will debut its first-ever degree in Aerospace Engineering in the next academic year at the University of La Laguna (ULL). The announcement was made by the President of the Tenerife Island Council, Rosa Dávila, during the presentation of the ‘Constelación Islas Canarias’ project. This satellite constellation aims to become the world’s second-best network for capturing infrared images.

Meeting demand in a growing sector

The Canaries will join about a dozen Spanish universities already offering similar studies. However, this new programme has a clear purpose: to cover the increasing demand for specialised labour. “We must tell young people training in these subjects that Tenerife and the Canary Islands will have an outlet, an alternative, so we do not lose that talent,” Dávila emphasised.

Ambitious projects driving employment

The bet by the Canary Islands, and Tenerife in particular, to stimulate the aerospace sector is already beginning to bear fruit. This is thanks to ambitious scientific projects, such as this satellite network or the construction of new telescopes, and the push from companies in the sector starting to establish themselves in the archipelago.

The ‘Constelación Islas Canarias’ is a prime example. The company managing the project, Telespazio Ibérica, is expected to generate around 150 direct jobs in the coming years.
