A holiday that ended on the airport floor

A British family holidaying in Lanzarote ended up sleeping on the floor of César Manrique Airport after their return flight was cancelled amid the crisis caused by a technological fault in the United Kingdom’s air traffic control system.

Nathan Elliot, 35, was travelling with his partner, Fallon Swallow, 37, their daughter Blaise, just two years old, and his in-laws, Mark and Deb Swallow. The family had flown out from Birmingham a week earlier to enjoy a few days of rest on the island. What should have been a routine journey home turned into an improvised night among suitcases, a cold floor and vending machines.

Seven hours of waiting, then a cancellation email

The family had been due to fly back to the United Kingdom at 18:35 on 8 September. They arrived at the airport three hours early, but the departure boards were already showing a delay until 23:00. Staff told them to check in their luggage and keep an eye out for further updates.

Seven hours later, easyJet informed them by email that the flight had been cancelled. The airline initially told them it would try to find them accommodation for the night. Then came another message: no hotel had been available. By that point, according to the family’s account to the British newspaper the Coventry Telegraph, local accommodation was fully booked and they could not find an immediate alternative. The result was a night at the airport.

A night on the terminal floor with a two-year-old

The little girl was able to sleep in her pushchair, but the adults had to sleep directly on the terminal floor. The situation became even more difficult as the night wore on. The airport’s outlets closed one by one and the family was left with virtually no options for getting food. One of the vending machines was out of order too.

They had saved some juice and small snacks for the child, while the four adults had to share a few bottles of water between them over the course of the night, according to their account.

An £880 hotel bill and a flight to the wrong city

The family eventually secured accommodation for the following night while they waited for their new flight. The price, however, was steep: £880, around €1,025, for one night in a hotel. On top of that, they still did not know whether the expense would ultimately be reimbursed.

The replacement flight did not solve the problem completely either. Their original destination was Birmingham, where they had left their car parked, but the alternative offered to them took them to London Gatwick instead.

The air traffic control failure behind the disruption

The problem originated in a fault in the flight processing system of NATS, the British air navigation service provider. The incident caused severe disruption to air traffic and left thousands of passengers affected by delays and cancellations at airports across the country.

This family’s case illustrates one of the most uncomfortable consequences of that day: a holiday in Lanzarote that ended with a little girl sleeping in a pushchair, her parents on the floor and an unexpected bill of more than a thousand euros before they had even managed to get home.
