Boat Sinks in Las Canteras Harbour Amid Storm Swell
Powerful waves sank a boat on Thursday in the anchorage at La Puntilla, part of Las Canteras beach in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The incident was reported by the X account @LasCanteras. The severe sea conditions have also forced local fishermen to move their vessels from the area to prevent them from being dragged away by the strong currents, as shown in a video shared by @yolandasuarez_93.
Coastal Alerts Activated Across the Archipelago
The Canary Islands Government’s General Directorate for Security and Emergencies decreed a coastal phenomena alert yesterday, effective from 00:00 on Thursday, 29 January. The alert affects the islands of El Hierro, La Palma and La Gomera, as well as the northern and western coasts of Tenerife and Gran Canaria. It also covers Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, including the entire coastline of the Jandía peninsula in Fuerteventura.
Pre-Alert Status for Eastern and Southeastern Shores
The rest of the autonomous community’s coastline remains under a pre-alert status. This includes the eastern and southeastern coasts of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.
Forecast Predicts Powerful Five-Metre Waves
The weather forecast predicts a combined northwesterly sea with waves reaching between four and five metres in height, primarily due to a heavy ground swell. This will most intensely affect coasts exposed to the north and west. On eastern and southeastern coasts, waves are generally not expected to exceed two metres in height.
