Thousands of Canary Islanders took to the streets this Saturday to make their voices heard against speculation, demand the right to housing, take aim at the political class and express their support for the call for a general strike.
Massive turnout in the two capitals
The largest demonstrations were held in the two island capitals. Around 8,000 people gathered in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, according to the organisers, while roughly 10,000 turned out in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Protests were also held in Arrecife, with around one hundred participants, and in Puerto del Rosario, with some 70 people.
A message directed at the Canary Islands government
Javier Marrero, a spokesperson for Derecho al Techo, explained that one of the messages of the demonstration was aimed explicitly at the Government of the Canary Islands, which he said bears a great deal of responsibility for the housing crisis because it also holds the relevant powers. He argued that this should begin with the declaration of stressed areas, which would allow a large number of properties to be recovered and turned into residential housing, and would make it possible to start bringing rent prices under control.
