Canary Islands see modest growth in August international arrivals

International passenger arrivals to the Canary Islands rose by 0.9% in August, according to data released on Friday by Turespaña. Across Spain as a whole, 12.3 million passengers arrived during the month, a rise of 5.5% compared with the same period last year.

Spain’s six leading regions capture almost all international demand

In terms of regional distribution, the six leading autonomous communities as destinations accounted for 96.8% of international demand, with increases recorded in all of them. The Valencian Community stood out with a rise of 12.5%, alongside the Canary Islands.

By airport, Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas led the network with 2.4 million passengers (+4.6%), followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 2.2 million (+5.9%), while Valencia recorded the largest percentage increase, up 13.4% year-on-year.

European market dominates as long-haul growth continues

The European market consolidated its position as the main source of travellers, accounting for 85.7% of global traffic after a year-on-year increase of 5.7%, while arrivals from the Americas rose 3.9% to represent 5.8% of the total flow.

With these figures, the cumulative total for the first eight months of the year stands at 79.3 million international passengers, a rise of 5.2% compared with 2025 and an additional 3.9 million visitors.

UK and Italy perform strongly as Germany and France slip back

August’s performance was marked by strong showings from traditional source markets such as the United Kingdom and Italy, against declines recorded by Germany and France, as well as notable increases in secondary European markets such as Poland and Belgium, and long-haul markets including China, Japan, Canada and Brazil.

By source market, the United Kingdom remained in first place with 2.9 million passengers — 23.7% of the total — after growing 7.5% year-on-year, with the Balearic Islands as its leading regional destination, taking a 26% share.

Germany was in second position with 1.5 million travellers, a decline of 1.4% that particularly affected the Balearic and Canary Islands. Italy, for its part, sent 1.3 million visitors after growing 7.7%, with particular dynamism in the Valencian Community, Andalusia and the Basque Country, while France recorded 820,748 arrivals, 1% fewer than in August 2025.
