The Canary Islands are in for a cooler day this Thursday, with temperatures dropping sharply and cloud building across the north of the archipelago. The trade wind will blow hard at times, and the Atlantic will turn rough along exposed coasts.
Cooler air, more cloud
Thursday’s standout feature is a notable fall in temperatures. Daytime highs will drop between 3 and 6°C compared with recent days, most noticeably in the midlands and high ground, and in inland areas of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.
Highs will range between 23°C and 29°C, with local values of 30-32°C in the Valle de Güímar and in southern parts of the other islands.
Skies will be cloudier than of late. Low cloud will cover much of the north and northeast of the higher islands, as well as the north and west of the easternmost ones. A spot of drizzle is possible in the midlands, most likely late in the day.
The wind will blow from the north to northeast, moderate to strong, with very strong gusts during the second half of the day. On the summits, the wind will settle into a northerly direction.
At sea, expect slightly choppy conditions along sheltered southern coasts, turning rough to very rough elsewhere, with waves of 1-2 metres.
Tenerife
Plenty of low cloud over the north and northeast, with occasional drizzle in the midlands. Sunshine elsewhere, with spells of fine weather in parts of the south. Temperatures cooler, with highs of 23-32°C. Moderate to strong trade wind.
Gran Canaria
Cloudy skies dominate the north and the capital, with a few drops possible in the midlands. Lots of sunshine elsewhere. Temperatures falling notably, with highs of 24-32°C. Moderate to strong trade wind, with gusts of 50-70km/h.
Lanzarote
Abundant low cloud over the north and west, perhaps a drop or two. Sunshine elsewhere, with milder temperatures and highs of 23-30°C. Moderate northerly wind.
Fuerteventura
More cloud, especially over the northern and western halves. A mix of cloud and clear spells elsewhere. Cooler temperatures, with highs of 24-31°C. Moderate trade wind.
La Palma
Lots of cloud over the north and east, where occasional drizzle is likely. Sunny spells elsewhere. Lower temperatures and a moderate northeasterly wind.
La Gomera
Cloudy skies over the north and parts of the summit, with a few drops possible. Sunshine elsewhere, milder temperatures and a moderate north-northeasterly wind.
El Hierro
Cloudy skies over the north and around the capital, with a few drops possible late on. Sunshine elsewhere, temperatures falling notably and a moderate to strong trade wind.
La Graciosa
Mostly cloudy, with the odd drop possible. Temperatures on the way down and a moderate north-northeasterly wind of 20-35km/h.
