The Yaiza town council in Lanzarote has ordered the temporary closure of the small beach at Playa Blanca following sewage discharges. The cove was also closed in July for the same reason.
Pumping station fault
The decision comes as a result of a breakdown at the pumping station near the beach, the council confirmed. In a statement, Yaiza has advised the public to respect the red flag until laboratory test results confirm the water is safe for bathing.
Red flag warning in force
The council has urged residents and visitors alike to respect the red flag and make use of other beaches in the south of the island while Public Health laboratory analyses are carried out to determine whether the water is suitable for swimming.
The local authority has reported the fault detected at the pumping station to the Lanzarote Water Consortium so that the public body can take action and resolve the issue.
