Drones used in Benijo beach evacuation
Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s Local Police force evacuated dozens of bathers from Benijo beach on Thursday, a stretch of sand that has been closed for two years due to rockfalls. Officers involved in the operation were assisted by the town hall’s drone unit, and according to the newspaper El Día, those removed from the beach may have numbered over 70.
Beach awaiting restoration work
The beach, located in the Anaga region, is awaiting rehabilitation. Last week, the town council passed a motion urging the national government to declare the works an urgent priority. It was in July 2024 when the councillor for Citizen Security and Emergencies, Gladis de León, signed a decree ordering the beach’s closure, following small rockfalls that had been observed in the preceding weeks.
Instability above the beach
The capital’s town hall explained that these minor falls of material could indicate instability in some areas of the hillside above the beach. The rockfalls were reported by staff from the Spanish Red Cross, which provides lifeguard and rescue services in the area.
