The Canary Islands are in for a warm and hazy Thursday. A layer of calima is drifting over the archipelago, pushing temperatures up across the board. The trade winds will blow moderately, with some strong gusts, while the Atlantic remains mostly calm.
General Conditions
Skies will be mostly clear or with just a few high clouds. Some low cloud cover is expected on the northern slopes of the mountainous islands and in the north and west of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, especially during the early and late hours.
The calima will be most noticeable in the mid-altitudes and on the summits. Daytime temperatures will climb, with thermometers likely to exceed 30°C in the southern and western mid-altitudes of the mountainous islands, as well as inland areas and the southeast of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. In Gran Canaria, localised temperatures could hit 40°C in these mid-altitudes, with warm nights expected. The south and east of Tenerife could see temperatures above 34°C.
The moderate trade wind will strengthen at times in the southeast and northwest, as well as in the interior of Lanzarote and the south of Jandía, where very strong gusts are likely in the afternoon. In the mountains, winds will be from the north. At sea, waves of 1 to 1.5 metres are expected on northern coasts, while the channels between islands could see waves over 2 metres. The more sheltered southern coasts will remain slightly choppy.
Tenerife
Low cloud intervals in the north below 600 metres. Mostly clear elsewhere with calima, more significant on the summits. Moderate trade winds, accelerating along the southeast and northwest coastal strips. Very warm temperatures, with local values up to 36°C in the east, south, and west mid-altitudes. The capital, Santa Cruz, will see a high of around 32°C.
