The island of Tenerife can boast of having the best airport in Spain and the third best in the world, according to a study by AirAdvisor, a platform specialising in passenger rights. Tenerife South Airport stood out for its punctuality, the quality of its facilities, and the overall passenger experience, among other criteria analysed. This recognition places the Tenerife airport ahead of other major Spanish hubs such as Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat.

The result reinforces Tenerife South’s role as one of the main gateways to the Canary Islands and as a strategic hub for millions of domestic and international passengers every year.

How the ranking was compiled

To draw up the classification, the study used punctuality data from Eurocontrol for 2025, more than 1.1 million passenger reviews, and other indicators related to the travel experience. AirAdvisor ranks Spain as the country with the strongest presence in the upper part of the ranking, with four airports among the top 12 positions. The island’s airport only trails London Heathrow and Dublin.

Tenerife South achieved an overall score of 14.81 points, securing third place in the European ranking and placing it ahead of globally renowned facilities such as Los Angeles, Rome Fiumicino, Amsterdam Schiphol, and Athens.

The top five airports worldwide

The ranking is headed by: London Heathrow with 16.94 points, Dublin with 16.74 points, Tenerife South with 14.81 points, Palma de Mallorca with 14.63 points, and Los Angeles with 13.79 points.

Spain is also the only country analysed to place two airports in the top five and four among the top 12. In addition to Tenerife South and Palma, Barcelona-El Prat appears in 11th place and Madrid-Barajas in 12th. The report notes this demonstrates that AENA manages its facilities very effectively.

Punctuality and passenger reviews drive the score

The AirAdvisor report explains that punctuality accounts for 40% of the total score, the same weight as ratings given by passengers themselves. In this category, Tenerife South recorded 75% of departures on time during 2025, a figure that kept it among the best-rated European airports for travel.

The remainder of the final score is made up of other factors including: reviews published by users, the cost of transfer between the airport and the city, the distance to the city centre, the commercial experience within the terminal, and the international classification awarded by Skytrax.

A comprehensive view of passenger experience

According to the methodology used by AirAdvisor, the combination of all these elements provides a more complete picture of the experience a passenger encounters from the moment they land until they leave the airport. The study highlights the strong performance of the Spanish airport network. While Tenerife South leads the national ranking, Palma de Mallorca trails by just a few tenths of a point with 14.63, occupying fourth place globally.

In the case of Barcelona-El Prat, strong passenger ratings offset a slightly more modest punctuality score, while Madrid-Barajas, despite holding four Skytrax stars, loses ground due to the weight given to on-time performance in the final classification.

With these results, Tenerife South reinforces its position as one of Europe’s major tourist entry points and becomes, according to this study, the Spanish airport offering the best experience for those planning to travel during the summer holidays.
