Thursday: Heat, strong winds, and rough seas
Thursday brings a classic summer mix across the Canary Islands: inland heat climbing well above 30°C, a brisk trade wind, and a choppy Atlantic between the islands. While the coasts will feel the breeze, expect significant heat in the south of the main islands. A slight cooldown is on the cards for Friday.
General outlook
Temperatures will surpass 32°C in the midlands of southern Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Fuerteventura. The trade wind will pick up, with gusts of up to 70 km/h in exposed areas. This will create a combined ocean swell, with waves around 1.5 metres high in the channels between the islands—so sailors and swimmers should be cautious.
Island by island
Tenerife
Low clouds sitting at around 800 metres will blanket the north, while the rest of the island enjoys mostly clear skies. The wind will strengthen at the island’s eastern and western extremes. Temperatures in the south will be hot, topping 32°C in the midlands.
Gran Canaria
The morning will bring a stubborn layer of low cloud (“panza de burro”) to the northern coast, especially during the first half of the day. The summits and the south will be sunny and clearer. Expect stronger winds on the western and southeastern coasts.
Lanzarote
In Arrecife, temperatures will range between 22°C and 29°C. Some scattered clouds may appear in the north during the morning, but otherwise it will be a mostly sunny day.
Fuerteventura
Mostly clear skies, with perhaps a few clouds over the west early in the morning. The south could see temperatures exceed 31°C. In the capital, expect a range of 22°C to 30°C.
La Palma
Temperatures will sit between 22°C and 26°C. Low clouds will affect the north and eastern slopes in the morning, but they will quickly lift away from the coast.
La Gomera
In San Sebastián, thermometers will read between 22°C and 28°C. Generally a warm and pleasant day.
El Hierro
Temperatures in the capital will range from 18°C to 24°C. Low clouds will linger in the north and east during the morning and again at the end of the day.
La Graciosa
The wind will pick up noticeably after midday. Some clouds are expected in the morning, followed by a breezy afternoon.
