Tuesday: scorching heat and Saharan dust

It’s going to be a hot one

Tuesday is shaping up to be a scorcher across the Canary Islands. Temperatures are climbing noticeably, especially in the midlands and southern slopes, while a layer of calima (Saharan dust) hangs over higher ground. The trade winds are blowing moderate to strong, bringing some rough conditions to the Atlantic.

General conditions

Skies will feature a mix of medium and high cloud cover, with some low cloud appearing along northern coasts of the mountainous islands early and late in the day. Calima will be more pronounced in the midlands and summits, particularly on southern-facing slopes.

Temperatures are on the rise across the board. The most intense heat will be in southern Gran Canaria, where thermometers could exceed 37ºC and locally touch 40ºC in the midlands. In southern and western Tenerife, temperatures may breach 35ºC and locally reach 37ºC. The western islands (La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro) could see 34ºC in southern and western midlands. In the north and interior of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, expect highs of 30ºC to 32ºC.

The trade winds will be moderate to strong, with likely very strong gusts on southeast and northwest slopes. On the peaks, winds will be light to moderate from the east.

At sea, conditions are rough on northern coasts and the western shores of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, with waves exceeding 2 metres. More sheltered southern coasts will see a rough ocean with some swell.
