Best Beaches in El Hierro — Natural Pools at the Edge of the World

El Hierro does not have typical beaches. It is the smallest and westernmost Canary Island — steep volcanic coastline, dramatic cliffs and a raw Atlantic. But it has something better: natural pools carved into lava, where you can swim peacefully surrounded by the wild ocean.

Natural Pools

  • Charco Manso — a natural pool on the northern coast. Atlantic waves crash against walls of lava while calm water sits inside. Raw beauty, one of El Hierro’s icons.
  • La Maceta — a series of terraced pools built into lava. Calm bathing in a wild setting, with a picnic area. The most “civilised” bathing spot on the island.

How to Get to El Hierro?

By plane from Tenerife Norte or Gran Canaria (Binter, 40-50 min). By ferry from Los Cristianos (Naviera Armas, ~2.5 h) or from La Palma. A car is absolutely essential on the island — there is no public transport.
