Playa de Santiago — a quiet fishing village on La Gomera

Playa de Santiago is the most peaceful spot on La Gomera — and that is precisely its charm. This small fishing village on the island’s southern coast lives slowly and quietly, far from the hippie vibe of Valle Gran Rey and the tourist bustle of San Sebastián. A small beach of dark pebbles, a handful of restaurants serving the daily catch, and a panoramic hotel perched on the cliff — that is the full repertoire, yet it is more than enough for a few genuinely relaxing days.

The beach and harbour

The beach at Playa de Santiago is a narrow strip of dark pebbles and gravel at the foot of the fishing harbour. It is not a textbook beach — there is no white sand, no sun loungers, no parasols. What you get instead is calm water sheltered by a breakwater, local fishermen mending their nets and a few colourful boats bobbing on the swell. Swimming is pleasant and safe, though the pebbly bottom calls for water shoes.

East of the port, the coastline offers rock pools — at low tide, natural bathing pools form in the lava, popular with locals. This is a quiet, unhurried place, where the day is measured by meal times and the position of the sun.

Jardín Tecina — the clifftop hotel

On the cliff above the village stands Hotel Jardín Tecina — the only large hotel on La Gomera and one of the finest on the island. This sprawling complex with gardens, pools and a golf course offers views of the ocean and neighbouring Tenerife. Even if you are not staying at the hotel, it is worth driving up for the panorama — the view over Playa de Santiago from above, with Mount Teide on the horizon, is unforgettable.

Jardín Tecina is also important logistically — Fred Olsen operates a direct ferry service from here to Los Cristianos on Tenerife (though La Gomera’s main ferry port is San Sebastián).

Fishing-village food

In Playa de Santiago you will find a handful of simple seafood restaurants by the harbour, serving whatever the fishermen brought in that morning. Typical dishes include vieja (parrotfish), sama (sea bream — a Canarian favourite), lapas (limpets) with mojo sauce and papas arrugadas (wrinkly salted potatoes). Prices are fair and portions generous. This is authentic La Gomera cooking, without the tourist mark-up.
