Playa de Amadores — the calmest beach on Gran Canaria

Playa de Amadores is a beach designed for relaxation — literally. This artificial crescent of light sand on the south-western coast of Gran Canaria was built with one purpose: to provide perfect conditions for swimming and sunbathing all year round. Two massive breakwaters block the waves, the water is always calm, and the gentle entry into the sea makes it a paradise for families with small children.

A beach engineered for tranquillity

Amadores is one of three artificial beaches on Gran Canaria. The sand — light and fine — was specially imported, and two massive breakwaters (visible on either side of the beach) create an enclosed cove with zero waves. Literally — even when storms rage on the open ocean, the water at Amadores resembles a calm lake.

The beach is about 500 metres long and shaped like a perfect crescent. The entry into the water is very gentle — for several metres from the shore, the depth barely reaches an adult’s knees. For parents of small children, this is priceless comfort. Since 2004, Amadores has held an unbroken Blue Flag certification, confirming the highest standards of water and beach cleanliness.

Facilities and amenities

Amadores is a premium beach — and priced accordingly. Sun lounger and parasol hire costs around 12-15 EUR per day, one of the highest rates in the Canary Islands. The promenade above the beach has a dozen or so restaurants and bars with sea views.

The beach is fully accessible for people with disabilities — ramps, amphibious beach wheelchairs (sillas anfibias), buoys, and safety nets in the water. Right next to it is Amadores Fun Park — a water playground with trampolines and inflatable obstacles on the water, a huge hit with children.

Location and getting there

Amadores lies between Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogán, on Gran Canaria’s south-western coast. Driving is straightforward — exit the GC-1 motorway onto the GC-500. Parking is paid and can get packed in peak season (tip: arrive before 10:00 or after 16:00). By Global bus, line 1 from Maspalomas/Playa del Inglés takes about 30 minutes.

From Amadores, it’s worth taking a stroll along the coastal promenade to Puerto Rico (about 15 minutes on foot) — a lovely route with views of the cliffs and ocean.

Amadores vs other Gran Canaria beaches

Amadores is the antithesis of the wild, windy beaches of the Canaries. If you’re looking for adventure, waves, and a surfer vibe — this is not your beach. But if you have small children, value peace and quiet, and want the certainty of warm, wave-free water — Amadores is probably the best beach in the entire archipelago for that purpose.

The sun lounger prices may seem steep, but nobody’s forcing you to rent them — your own towel on the sand costs exactly nothing. And the view from the beach of the surrounding cliffs and cloudless sky is worth every penny of your plane ticket.

Nearby beaches

Right next to Amadores lies Puerto Rico — a larger resort with its own sheltered beach (though less charming). To the west, about 10 minutes’ drive, is the lovely Puerto de Mogán — the “little Venice of Gran Canaria” with an intimate harbour beach. And to the east, towards Maspalomas, stretches the enormous Playa del Inglés with its dunes — a completely different world from peaceful Amadores.
