Yellow warnings for winds and coastal conditions
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has activated a yellow warning for adverse coastal phenomena, which will remain in effect at least throughout Tuesday. This is in addition to an identical warning for strong winds. Both will affect the western islands and Gran Canaria, with maximum wind gusts of 70 km/h expected. At sea, a north-easterly wind of 50 to 61 km/h (force 7) will blow in the channel between Tenerife and Gran Canaria, as well as in the channel between La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.
Government activates pre-alerts
In response to this situation, the Government of the Canary Islands has activated a pre-alert for winds, while maintaining the existing pre-alert for coastal phenomena. The wind pre-alert will come into force from 16:00 on Friday, specifically affecting the summits, east, south and west of Gran Canaria; the summits and west of La Palma; La Gomera; El Hierro; the east, south and west of Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
Island-by-island forecast
For Tenerife, the Aemet forecast predicts cloudy skies in the north with weak rainfall, especially in the northeast during the first half of the day when it may be locally persistent. There will be intervals of cloud elsewhere, with a predominance of cloudy skies in the west. Temperatures will see little change or a slight rise, with the possibility of weak frosts on the central peaks. A moderate to strong trade wind with occasional very strong gusts is expected on the southeast slope and extreme northwest, becoming more frequent and intense in the afternoon. Sea breezes will develop in the west.
For the archipelago as a whole, there will be a predominance of cloudy to overcast skies in the north of the mountainous islands, where weak rainfall is forecast, especially during the first half of the day. Intervals of cloud are expected on the southern coasts of these islands. In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, intervals of cloud are forecast with a low probability of occasional weak precipitation.
A moderate to strong trade wind with occasional very strong gusts is expected on the summits and southeastern and northwestern slopes of the islands with higher relief, particularly in the central islands and in La Gomera during the afternoon.
