Santa Cruz Establishes Volcanic Contingency Commission
The mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, has decreed the creation of a technical commission to implement an action plan for a potential volcanic eruption on the island. This new body will advise the mayor on evaluating scenarios, proposing preventive measures, and coordinating organisational and logistical actions, the City Council has reported.
Capital’s Key Role in Crisis Management
Mayor Bermúdez maintains that, while the risk of direct impact from lava is reduced in the capital, the city would play a fundamental role in logistical and humanitarian management in the event of an eruption elsewhere in Tenerife. The commission will plan for the possible temporary reception and shelter of affected populations who might be evacuated from other island municipalities to the capital.
Structure and Responsibilities of the Working Group
The decree establishes that the working group will be chaired by the general coordinator of Infrastructure, Emergencies and Mobility, who will direct the various general directors. Members include heads of Environmental Sustainability, Public Safety and Budget Management to guarantee the continuity of essential services and supplies.
Coordination and Confidential Reporting
The mayor has stressed that the City Council maintains permanent contact with the Tenerife Island Council (Cabildo) and the Government of the Canary Islands to conduct comprehensive monitoring of the current situation. The commission must produce a confidential report with a governance and management model to enable an effective and coordinated response across all departments of the capital’s council.
