A breath of cooler air
The heatwave that has baked the Canary Islands is finally easing. From Wednesday (1 July), temperatures will begin to drop—though not dramatically. Many spots in the midlands, especially on Tenerife and Gran Canaria, will still hit the 30°C mark. The good news? The Saharan dust (calima) is clearing, and the strong winds are calming down.
General conditions
Cloud cover will be limited to the northern slopes of the islands and the western side of the eastern islands, mostly during the early and late hours. Winds will still be gusty in the northwest and southeast of the more mountainous islands and in the central-south of the eastern ones, but will ease as the day goes on. At sea, conditions are improving: combined swells with waves around 2 metres in the north, and closer to 1 metre in sheltered southern areas.
Island by island
Tenerife
Clouds will be scarce, mostly lingering on the northern side at dawn and dusk. The calima is on its way out. Winds will drop off and temperatures will fall, though the midlands may still see 30°C.
Gran Canaria
Gusty conditions persist in the west and southeast but will ease through the day. Clouds are confined to the north. Temperatures will drop, particularly in the southern interior where the mercury may still hover around 30°C.
Lanzarote
Slightly cooler in Arrecife, with highs of 28°C and lows of 21°C. Few clouds, mostly visible in the north and west. Winds will calm down as the day progresses.
Fuerteventura
Low clouds in the north and west; the rest of the island stays clear and free of Saharan dust. Puerto del Rosario sees a range of 21°C to 28°C.
La Palma
Very little cloud, with what there is hugging the north and east coasts and likely moving away from the shore. Less calima, and winds will ease by the afternoon. Temperatures are dropping.
La Gomera
Mostly clear skies. Temperatures will fall but it will still feel warm during the midday and early afternoon, with highs around 28°C in San Sebastián.
El Hierro
Very few clouds, perhaps a few at daybreak. The calima clears, and windy conditions will last into the afternoon. Temperatures in Valverde range from 16°C to 20°C.
La Graciosa
Scattered clouds early on giving way to clearer skies. Temperatures are a little cooler, and winds will ease towards the end of the day. Sea conditions are improving.
