Major Road Expansion Gets Final Approval
The Canary Islands Government’s Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility has given its definitive approval for the construction project to add a third lane to the TF-1 motorway between San Isidro and Oroteanda in Tenerife. The project, drafted by the firm Proyma Consultores S.L.P., has an estimated base budget of €126,359,191.48.
Project Scope and Key Improvements
In a statement, the General Director of Road Infrastructure, Rosana Melián, explained that the project begins at kilometre point 53+450, before the New San Isidro Junction, and ends at kilometre point 64+305, just past the recently completed Oroteanda Junction. The current section consists of two carriageways with two lanes in each direction, each lane 3.5 metres wide, with 1-metre inner hard shoulders, 2.5-metre outer hard shoulders, a 2-metre central reservation, and outer verges.
The main objective of the project is to expand the infrastructure by adding a third lane in each direction, creating a new junction at Granadilla, and remodelling two existing junctions at San Isidro and the Airport. The configuration of the Airport junction will be completely redefined. “This action seeks to substantially improve the capacity, flow, and safety of a road that suffers from high levels of congestion and intense daily traffic,” added Melián.
A Strategic Boost for Southern Tenerife
The regional government states that this resolution advances a key road infrastructure project in the municipalities of Granadilla de Abona and San Miguel de Abona. Furthermore, the autonomous government believes this initiative lays the groundwork for a strategic intervention designed to improve the capacity and flow of the motorway in the south of the island.
Rosana Melián described this step as indispensable for providing southern Tenerife with the road capacity demanded by its population and economic growth. She also emphasised that the resolution has been designed with a comprehensive approach that prioritises road safety and environmental integration.
Completing the TF-1 Expansion Plan
With the definitive approval of the construction project for the third lane on the TF-1 between San Isidro and Oroteanda, and following the prior approval last November for the section between Oroteanda and Las Américas, the construction projects needed to expand the TF-1 in Tenerife are now complete. This marks significant progress on a key action to improve capacity and mobility on the island’s main transport artery.
