Tenerife Earthquake Swarms Subside After Ten Days

Seismic activity in Tenerife calms after intense period

Seismic activity within the Las Cañadas del Teide caldera on Tenerife has subsided, with no new earthquake swarms recorded in the last 48 hours beyond sporadic, low-frequency events. This marks the longest period of calm in the last ten days. Rubén López, spokesperson for Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN), confirmed the news to EFE, though he cautioned that this does not necessarily indicate the end of the seismic episode that began on 18 February.

Latest swarm was the least energetic

The most recent swarm of tremors occurred between 5:00 and 12:00 on Thursday, registering around a thousand individual events. López pointed out that this swarm was the least energetic of the seven recorded since the episode began.

Scientific committee confirms no increased eruption risk

The scientific committee of the Canary Islands Volcanic Emergency Plan (Pevolca) met on Friday. They confirmed that, aside from the seismicity, other monitored parameters such as ground deformation have shown no changes, and gas emissions have decreased. The committee therefore reiterated its message that there is no increased probability of a volcanic eruption in Tenerife in the short or medium term (weeks or months).

Tenerife-Gran Canaria quake likely unrelated

During the same meeting, scientists emphasised that the magnitude 4.1 earthquake located between Tenerife and Gran Canaria on Thursday, which was widely felt by the population, does not appear to be directly related to the recent swarms in Las Cañadas. They confirmed that the anomalous volcanic activity detected since 2016 in the area continues to increase.

Enhanced monitoring remains in place

The Pevolca scientific committee concluded by stating that it continues to analyse the evolution of this activity in detail and that volcanic surveillance on the island is being reinforced.
