First Snowfall of Storm Regina Settles on Gran Canaria Peaks
The effects of the high-impact storm Regina began to be felt from Tuesday across the summit of Gran Canaria, where the first snowfalls have been recorded from an altitude of 1,700 to 1,800 metres.
Road Closures and Safety Warnings in Place
Due to the condition of the roads accessing the island’s highlands and the forecast for ice patches on the carriageway, the Gran Canaria Island Council has updated information on the state of the routes. Access to Pico de las Nieves via the GC-134 and to Los Pechos via the GC-135 remains closed. The council is urging caution for drivers using these roads due to the presence of ice and hail.
Pre-Alert Extended to Tenerife and La Palma
The Canary Islands Government, through the General Directorate for Emergencies, declared a pre-alert for snowfall in the highlands of La Palma, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria. This measure came into effect at 00:00 hours on Tuesday, 3 March, as stated in an official release.
