Playa del Confital — the surf spot of Las Palmas at the foot of La Isleta

Confital is not a beach for sunbathing and splashing around. It’s a rugged, rocky-sandy shore on the northern tip of Las Palmas, just beyond the famous Las Canteras, where the Atlantic slams into the volcanic reef at full force. For surfers — one of the best right-hand breaks in Europe. For everyone else — a spectacular spot to watch the raw power of the ocean from a safe distance.

The Confital wave — a legend of European surfing

The wave at Confital breaks over a volcanic reef several hundred metres offshore and peels right for as much as 300-400 metres. In ideal conditions (north-west swells, 2-4 metres), it’s one of the longest and most tubular waves in all of Europe. It’s no wonder that world-class surfing competitions have been held here.

This is a wave for experienced surfers only. The reef is shallow, the currents are strong, and the bottom is rocky. Beginners should stick to neighbouring Las Canteras, where conditions are far safer. Swimming at Confital is strongly discouraged — strong currents and rocks make it dangerous even for strong swimmers.

La Isleta nature reserve

Confital lies within the La Isleta nature reserve — a volcanic peninsula on the northern tip of Las Palmas. It’s a protected area with rich marine flora and fauna. The walk along the coast from Las Canteras to Confital (about 30 minutes) follows a path through volcanic rocks with views of the open Atlantic. It’s one of the best short walks in Las Palmas.

It’s worth coming here at sunset — the view over the ocean from the clifftops is spectacular. On the shore you’ll often see fishermen casting lines into the surf. The local surfing community treats Confital as sacred ground — there’s an unwritten code of respect for the wave and for each other.

Getting there

Confital lies at the end of Playa de Las Canteras, in the northern part of Las Palmas. The easiest way is on foot — along the Las Canteras promenade, then via the path around the La Isleta headland (about 30 min from the end of Las Canteras). By car you can drive to a small car park at the base, but spaces are very limited. By bus — Guaguas Municipales to the “La Isleta” stop, then on foot.
