Veteran NBA Champion Signs for Tenerife Club
CB Canarias, based in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife, has secured the services of Australian point guard Patty Mills, 37, for the remainder of the current season, the Canary Islands club announced in a statement.
A Storied NBA Career
Mills boasts an impressive 1,020 games in his NBA career, comprising 921 regular-season appearances and 99 playoff matches, spread across seven different franchises. He won the championship ring in 2014 with Gregg Popovich’s San Antonio Spurs. His career also included stints with the Portland Trail Blazers (with whom he made his debut in 2009), the Brooklyn Nets, Atlanta Hawks, Miami Heat, Utah Jazz, and most recently, the Los Angeles Clippers.
He spent a decade with the Spurs, averaging 10.2 points per game with a 42% success rate from three-point range. Outside the United States, he has played for Melbourne United in his native Australia and the Xinjiang Flying Tigers in the Chinese league.
Olympic Glory and Historic Honour
With the Australian national team, Mills competed in every Olympic Games from Beijing 2008 to Paris 2024. At the Tokyo 2020 Games, he won a bronze medal and served as a flag bearer. On that occasion, he became the first Indigenous Australian athlete to carry the flag in the opening ceremony. He has played 64 games for his country, averaging 17.7 points.
Joining a Squad of Veterans
At La Laguna Tenerife, Mills joins a roster featuring many other renowned veterans, such as fellow point guard Marcelinho Huertas (42), Aaron Doornekamp (40), Gio Shermadini (36), and Tim Abromaitis (36).
