Norwegian King to Extend Tenerife Hospital Stay
King Harald V of Norway, aged 89, will remain in a hospital in south Tenerife for several more days after being admitted with an infection. The Norwegian Royal House has confirmed that the monarch’s overall condition is stable and improving favourably.
Treatment at Hospiten Sur Hospital
The head of state of the Kingdom of Norway is being treated at the Hospiten Sur University Hospital, located in the municipality of Arona, where he has been receiving medical care since Tuesday. According to the medical bulletin released by the Royal House, the infection originated from a skin condition on his leg. Doctors have also treated the King for dehydration.
Condition Deemed Serious Due to Age
The King’s personal physician, Dr Bjørn Bendz, travelled to Tenerife to oversee his progress. The official statement notes that, despite his current stability, “when a person nearly 90 years old is admitted with an infection, the situation must be considered serious.” Consequently, the decision has been made to keep him under hospital observation for several additional days.
Holiday Interrupted for Royal Couple
Harald V was enjoying a short break in Tenerife with Queen Sonja when he required hospital admission. The Queen Consort visited her husband at the medical centre today. The monarch was previously hospitalised abroad two years ago during a holiday in Malaysia, also due to an infection. On that occasion, he was later transferred to Oslo by air ambulance and subsequently had a pacemaker fitted in Norway.
