Nine Bidders Vie for Tenerife’s Crucial TF-5 Third Lane Project

Major TF-5 Expansion Project Attracts Nine Bidders

The Canary Islands Government’s Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, headed by Pablo Rodríguez, has announced that nine bidders have come forward for the tender to construct a third lane on the TF-5 motorway. The project covers the stretch between Guamasa and Tenerife North Airport in the direction of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This is a strategic intervention designed to improve the capacity, safety, and fluidity of traffic on one of the most heavily used transport corridors in the Canaries.

Substantial Investment and Competing Consortia

The project’s base tender budget amounts to €66,401,344.71, including IGIC (Canary Islands General Indirect Tax). The companies and joint ventures that have submitted bids for this development are: Acciona; Asch Infraestructuras-Transformaciones y Servicios S.A. (TRAYSESA); Sando-El Silbo; Dragados-Señalizaciones Villar; FCC; Ferrovial Construcción S.A-ASYOTA; OHLA-Agrupación Guinovart Obras y Servicios; Sacyr-Darias-Sabina; and Satocan S.A.-Vías y Construcciones.

Transforming a Congested Corridor

The works at Guamasa will mean a significant increase in the TF-5’s capacity towards Santa Cruz de Tenerife, expanding this section from two to three lanes. This will allow it to absorb higher traffic volumes and improve driving conditions at one of the most congested points on the island’s road network.

Junction Remodelling and New Airport Link

Beyond the extra lane, the project includes the remodelling of the Guamasa and San Lázaro junctions, as well as the construction of a new direct access route to Tenerife North Airport. This new layout will separate traffic heading to and from the north and south of the island. It replaces the current single-junction scheme with a more efficient system featuring differentiated access points.

Consequently, vehicles arriving from the north will access the North Airport via the new airport link, instead of continuing to San Lázaro as is currently the case. This traffic reorganisation will allow a portion of vehicles to exit the most congested stretch of the TF-5 earlier, directly contributing to smoother traffic flow for all road users.
