New Stairway Installed for La Laguna’s Key Footbridge

Major footbridge installation completed in La Laguna

The Island Council of Tenerife installed a new section of stairway overnight on Monday, connecting La Laguna’s Transport Interchange with the Padre Anchieta footbridge. This substantial structure weighs 10 tonnes and measures 10 metres in length. With this move, the infrastructure takes a decisive step forward, as it allows for the completion of all four connections of the Padre Anchieta footbridge, a strategic project for mobility in the north of the island.

Complex technical manoeuvres

The island’s Highways Councillor, Dámaso Arteaga, highlighted that the works are progressing “little by little” towards their final phase. Installing the piece was not without its technical complications. Arteaga explained that the manoeuvres were complex due to the precise inclination required to position the stairway section, necessitating meticulous work before proceeding with welding.

Easing a major congestion point

This work is part of a total project investment of €12 million. Its objective is to reorganise traffic at the Padre Anchieta roundabout, one of the most congested points on the TF-5 motorway. Every day, more than 50,000 vehicles and 20,000 pedestrians pass through this area, most of them students from the University of La Laguna.

Improving pedestrian safety

At present, many of these pedestrians are forced to cross the road using up to twelve different pedestrian crossings. This situation causes continuous traffic hold-ups and increases the risk to road safety. The new footbridge network is designed to alleviate these persistent issues.
