Nearly 10,000 march in Las Palmas over housing crisis

Almost 10,000 people have already joined the march called in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to demand solutions to the difficulties of accessing housing and to call for measures guaranteeing this right.

The demonstration, which set off from the area around the GaldΓ³s Monument in Plaza de la Feria, was heading towards the headquarters of the Canary Islands regional government at 11.30am, following several days of protests and the encampment set up in this space in defence of the right to housing.

Slogans against housing policy

During the march, slogans are being heard in defence of the right to housing and also in support of antifascist neighbourhoods. Among the chants, one stands out: “The Canary Islands government is an estate agent”, aimed at the housing policies of the Canary Islands institutions.

The protest has also included a symbolic sit-in in front of the Canary Islands government headquarters, with demonstrators raising their keys as a gesture of protest against the difficulties of accessing a home.

Protests to continue

The demonstration follows on from the protests staged in recent days, after the two decree laws on housing were rejected in the Congress of Deputies with the votes of PP, Vox and Junts.

The participating groups and activists, among them the Tenerife Tenants’ Union and Derecho al Techo, had already warned that the demonstrations would continue.
