Indefinite strike called at Lanzarote waste collection service
The CCOO union has called an indefinite strike starting on 13 October at the selective waste collection service managed by the company Urbaser. According to the organisation, the decision was taken on Tuesday following a unanimous vote by the workers’ assembly, in response to the lack of progress in collective bargaining and the repeated failure to uphold labour rights and occupational risk prevention measures.
All staff at Lanzarote collection centre affected
The strike, which is indefinite in nature, will affect all staff working at the selective waste collection centre in Lanzarote. The strike committee is chaired by Echedey Hernández Martín, with advice from CCOO.
A long list of ignored demands
The strike call, the union states, is based on a long list of demands that the company has systematically ignored. CCOO highlights that one of these concerns occupational risk prevention, given the lack of adequate maintenance of vehicles and work tools, as well as the absence of ergonomic studies or assessments of metabolic consumption.
Other points include the application of the public holiday bonus, the failure to comply with minimum rest periods, issues with the supply, replacement and availability of work clothing, medical check-ups scheduled outside working hours, and the non-payment of night hours that were actually worked and recorded.
Pay frozen since the end of 2024
CCOO also points to the deadlock in collective bargaining to update salary conditions, which have been frozen since 31 December 2024.
The union representation reminds the Cabildo de Lanzarote that, as the administration responsible for the service, it has a duty to ensure that the contracted company complies with labour law. “It is not understandable that the Cabildo expresses respect for labour rights while allowing Urbaser to breach rest periods, risk prevention and the collective agreement,” CCOO states.
Union remains open to negotiation
Despite calling the strike, the strike committee and CCOO say they remain willing to negotiate with Urbaser’s management in order to reach agreements that would avert it.
