Multi-Agency Rescue at El Penitente

A rescue helicopter from the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) was involved in the rescue of a swimmer in difficulty this Sunday at El Penitente, in the Tenerife municipality of Puerto de la Cruz. The alert was received by the Coordinating Centre for Emergencies and Security (Cecoes) at 11:34am.

Swift Response from Police and Lifeguards

The initial alert stated that two officers from the Local Police had jumped into the sea to assist a woman who was struggling to get out of the water. They were joined by two lifeguards present in the area, who collaborated in the intervention while emergency resources were activated.

Helicopter Airlift and Medical Evacuation

After receiving the alert, the 112 emergency services mobilised a GES rescue helicopter, a basic life support ambulance from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), and a Maritime Rescue vessel. The helicopter successfully winched the casualty up and transferred her to the esplanade at El Penitente, where medical personnel carried out an initial assessment.

The casualty was a 78-year-old woman who sustained minor injuries at the initial point of care. She was subsequently evacuated by ambulance to the Hospiten Bellevue hospital for a more comprehensive evaluation.

All Rescuers Accounted For

The vessel dispatched to the area was tasked with transporting the two local police officers and the two lifeguards who took part in the rescue back to the harbour. None of them were injured.
