Football match in Tenerife suspended after violent clashes
The match between Atlético Unión Güímar and Sporting Hortaleza, which was scheduled to take place this Sunday in Güímar, Tenerife, has been suspended. The fixture was called off after the Madrid-based side deemed that safety conditions had not been met, as confirmed by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).
Violent altercations before kick-off
Violent altercations occurred before the match. Footage broadcast by Televisión Canaria shows how home supporters greeted the coach carrying the visiting team’s players with stones, forcing them to leave the José Ramos de Tasagaya ground escorted by police.
“The Sporting de Hortaleza players cannot take to the field because their safety and that of the travelling families is not guaranteed,” the Madrid Football Federation stated an hour before the match was suspended, according to Efe. The team won the first leg 1-0. However, with the return fixture not having been played, the fate of the tie now rests with the RFEF.
“If the atmosphere is hostile without playing, it could be even more dangerous if the match goes ahead. Our solidarity with them,” the body added regarding the Madrid club, alongside a video showing the footballers changed and ready to play, but standing in the stands of the Canarian stadium.
The Madrid Federation had also stated earlier that “the hostility with which Sporting de Hortaleza has been received and the degrading treatment their players, coaches and supporters are enduring seriously jeopardise the staging of the match.”
Sporting de Hortaleza denounce threats and attacks
Sporting de Hortaleza released a statement this afternoon denouncing that members of their club had received “threats, verbal abuse and physical attacks”. They also thanked the Civil Guard for their assistance in escorting them from the coach, as well as Paco Díez, president of the Royal Madrid Football Federation, for staying in contact with the board and showing concern for the wellbeing of the players, coaching staff, directors and relatives present.
“It is a shame that a match of such importance and significance for the history of both clubs could not be enjoyed,” they stressed.
Güímar coach denies bottle-throwing and assaults
For his part, Atlético Unión Güímar coach Aythamy Díaz said that “safety was deemed valid, it was deemed that everything was protected, it was deemed that the match could be played”. “If they don’t want to take part, the rules exist for a reason,” he said.
He also denied that bottles were thrown at Sporting Hortaleza or that assaults took place. “Throwing bottles, no. An empty plastic bottle fell on someone from our coaching staff. And I myself was personally attacked by someone from Hortaleza when I was alone. The video is there and it can be verified and so on. Absolutely nothing else happened,” he stated.
Díaz also justified the situation by saying that “there is a heated atmosphere in Güímar and it’s football”.
Official match report reveals sequence of events
The official match report has been published by the RFEF. It sets out in detail the reasons why the fixture was suspended. Once installed in the referees’ dressing room, the report begins, the Sporting Hortaleza delegate reported that the team had arrived late at the sports facility because home supporters had thrown objects at their coach, even breaking a window.
Following this, the visiting team settled into the sports facility. After entering the dressing room following the warm-up prior to kick-off, both the refereeing trio and players from both teams were informed by the federation delegate that, on the instructions of the Federation and the Civil Guard, they must wait for the Civil Guard to arrive to guarantee the safety of the players, referees and spectators alike.
During the wait, the Sporting delegate appeared in the dressing room and reported that members of their travelling party were receiving threats and that a player had been struck by a bottle. Two minutes later, the Güímar coach reported in the dressing room that he had been assaulted.
After 37 minutes waiting for the Civil Guard deployment, the lieutenant in charge of the operation arrived and confirmed that “safety is guaranteed throughout the match”. Following this, Sporting stated that they did not wish to play the fixture given the circumstances they had experienced both on arrival at the ground and during the first entry onto the pitch. After communicating the visiting team’s decision, they left the field escorted by the Civil Guard, the report concludes.
