Strong trade winds take centre stage
The trade winds are not just sticking around — they are gaining strength. From Wednesday afternoon and into Thursday, gusts could exceed 80 km/h on the most mountainous islands, with slightly lighter winds on Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. In the channels between the islands, strong gusts will stir up the Atlantic, bringing waves around 2.5 metres high. Rough ocean conditions are expected in the south.
Cloud cover will be thicker at dawn and dusk over the western islands and Gran Canaria, as well as on the northern and western sides of the eastern islands. These clouds will burn off as the morning progresses. The rest of the sky stays clear. Daytime temperatures won’t change much from recent days, and the mornings will feel cool.
Island-by-island forecast
Tenerife
Clouds will gather over the north early and late in the day, with a chance of a stray drop of rain. There could be fog at the northern airport. Elsewhere, expect sunshine. Strong winds will buffet the island’s exposed tips and peaks.
Gran Canaria
Heavy low cloud will stick to the northern municipalities, while the rest of the island enjoys the sun. Strong gusts, around 80 km/h in exposed areas, are expected. Temperatures remain similar to yesterday.
Lanzarote
Thick low clouds will cover the north and west in the morning and late evening. The wind will pick up from the southeast. Temperatures range between 19 °C and 25 °C.
Fuerteventura
A moderate wind blows across the island. Cloud cover will be uniform across most of the island in the morning, clearing later. The capital will see temperatures between 19 °C and 26 °C.
La Palma
Low clouds will hug the north and the eastern coast, but the rest of the island stays clear. Wind speeds will exceed 70 km/h at the island’s extremities. Temperatures remain steady.
La Gomera
Gusts close to 80 km/h are expected inland by late afternoon. Cloud cover will stay in the northern municipalities; the rest sees clear skies. Temperatures are similar to the rest of the archipelago.
El Hierro
Scattered clouds will drift across the north, with clear spells by midday. Strong winds are forecast. Temperatures will range between 14 °C and 17 °C.
La Graciosa
Low clouds will dominate the morning sky but will retreat by midday. The wind will be noticeable out at sea. Temperatures will be similar to the rest of the islands.
Calima and UV warning
No calima (Saharan dust) is expected for this Wednesday. With the strong winds and clear skies, UV levels will be high during the midday hours — don’t forget the sunscreen.
