Wednesday: heat peaks before the weekend cooldown

Wednesday marks the last scorcher of this heat spell

After several days of suffocating temperatures in the midlands of southern Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and parts of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, Wednesday is the final day of this heat episode. A light northerly wind is blowing, but it won’t shift the warm air mass significantly until Thursday, when temperatures will start dropping progressively. The weekend is expected to be much more humid.

General conditions: heat, calima, and calm seas

Maximum temperatures could reach 40°C in the interior south of Gran Canaria, and 38°C in Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. In the western province, highs will hover around 34°C. Expect mostly clear skies with a few early and late clouds in the north. A light Saharan dust haze (calima) is present but not significant. The Atlantic remains calm, with waves under one metre on both northern and southern coasts.

Island-by-island forecast

Tenerife

In the midlands, temperatures could exceed 34°C. A thin layer of clouds will hang around the 400-metre level in the north during the morning, while the rest of the island enjoys full sun.

Gran Canaria

Low clouds hugging the northern coast early and late in the day, otherwise clear and sunny. In the capital, temperatures will top out at 27°C, but inland south, the mercury could hit 40°C.

Lanzarote

Clouds in the north and west early on will gradually drift away from the coast. Temperatures in Arrecife will range between 22°C and 34°C, with warmer conditions in the south.

Fuerteventura

Temperatures in the interior south could reach 38°C, but will drop on Thursday. Morning clouds in the north and west will quickly clear.

La Palma

Low clouds will be limited to the north during the early hours, then dissipate. The rest of the island will be sunny with temperatures between 21°C and 30°C.

La Gomera

Little cloud cover, except for some early and late clouds in the north. Elsewhere, hazy sunshine due to calima. Temperatures will range from 23°C to 30°C.

El Hierro

Heat returns to the midlands. In Valverde, the thermometer will climb from 21°C to 33°C. Only scattered clouds are expected in the north.

La Graciosa

Morning clouds will clear as the day progresses. Wind will be light, and while temperatures will be high, the sea breeze should keep conditions bearable on this small island.
